After years and years of sketching, I've come to the realization that sketching is the backbone of my art.
Spring of 2017 I had what I consider my epiphany of what defines me as an artist. It started with my art college roommate, Mark O’Connor, making the casual comment, “Your sketching was who you were in college.” Sure, I painted, did printmaking, had advertising classes, sculpted, and yes, I sketched a lot, but wouldn’t have ever thought or said, “Sketching is what defines me as an artist”. I haven’t stopped thinking about Mark's comment. In fact, I’ve got piles and piles of sketchbooks and scraps and scraps of paper with drawings to prove it!
All sketches in this gallery have been drawn directly from life, not from photographs.
